The intricate family connections are staggering, and it does help that this book includes family trees. ![]() There is also an element of danger as an ex-CIA agent is hunting various members of the family for his own gains. The tension really builds as Taylor and Jace each separately try to track down their family history, finding bit by bit that they are destined to meet and fulfill their ancestors' wishes. While their ancestors were involved in the Civil War and World War II, this generation is caught up in the events leading to and after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Zack Keens, new recruit to the CIA, is also living up to the brave women in her past who have served their country in times of war. Jace Bowen is a traveling nurse, carrying on the legacy of the women in her family who have been nurses and healers. Taylor Shaw is the latest in a long line of journalists who go into harm's way to cover wars. This is an excellent, wholesome, and big-hearted read about young queer people facing down their personal demons. ![]() As with Tingle's previous horror novella Straight, this title's content is appropriate for YA horror readers and up. Supernatural horror elements are handled head-on, but cleverly, and the execution of this high-concept story is straightforward and effective. It's a story of hope, as a young woman recovers from damage suffered at the hands of an extremist cult, both over the course of her lifetime and as a result of her enforced stay at the cult's outwardly "successful" conversion therapy camp.
